The third round of the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series 2019-20 was held at the FMG Stadium Waikato in Hamilton, New Zealand over the weekend of 25-26 January 2020. This was the third of ten tournaments for the season.
The fifteen core teams on the 2019-20 season are: Argentina, Australia, Canada, England, Fiji, France, Ireland, Kenya, New Zealand, Samoa, Scotland, South Africa, Spain, USA and Wales. Ireland became a core team for the first time after they won the 2019-20 World Series Qualifier in Hong Kong. Japan were relegated as the lowest-placed core team in the 2018-19 season. The core teams compete at every tournament, while one place is available to a non-core team at each tournament. Japan were invited as the non-core team at the 2020 New Zealand Sevens.
At Hamilton, Japan were in Pool B along with England, South Africa and Kenya. In their pool games, Japan lost 31-5 to South Africa in their opening game on Saturday afternoon then drew 12-all with Kenya later in the evening. On Sunday morning, Japan lost 26-7 to England to finish on the bottom of their pool with four points from a draw and two losses.
In their thirteenth place placement match later on Sunday, Japan lost 19-15 to Spain.
In the Cup Final, New Zealand beat France 27-5, while Australia beat England 33-21 to take third place.
Japan finished in fourteenth place overall in Hamilton.
After three rounds, New Zealand have opened up a substantial lead with 63 points from South Africa and France both on 48 points.
The next round of the series is in Sydney, Australia from 1-2 February 2020.
