Pools Announced for Men’s & Women’s Sevens at Paris Olympics

Following the unveiling of the pools for the Olympic rugby sevens this week by World Rugby and Paris 2024, Japan’s Men’s and Women’s teams learnt who they will face at this year’s Paris 2024 Olympic Games Sevens Tournament, taking place in the French capital from 24-30 July.

Lining up in Pool A, Japan Men will face New Zealand, Ireland and South Africa, while Japan Women will take on USA, Brazil and hosts France in Pool C. Having featured in both the inaugural Olympic Rugby Sevens in Rio in 2016 and as hosts in Tokyo in 2021, Paris will be the third straight Olympics at which both Japan’s men and women sides will compete in Olympic rugby sevens.

Commenting following the pool announcement, Japan Women’s Sevens Head Coach, Takashi Suzuki said:

“We’re very excited to know our pool opponents for Paris 2024. All the teams have competed strongly across the World Series, especially hosts France who are the third-ranked team in the World Series. The Olympics will provide a huge challenge for the Sakura Sevens, and we will use the time we have until the Games to prepare well so that we can show what we have been building for the Olympic stage. We count on your continued support”

Japan Men’s Sevens Head Coach, Simon Amor added:

“With just a month to go, it’s exciting to confirm our pool opposition at the Paris 2024 Olympics. New Zealand are consistently one of the best teams on the World Series and with one of the most experienced squads, will be looking to win their first Olympics. Ireland have been the most consistent team on the World Series this year and after an inconsistent season having won the repechage, South Africa’s confidence will be high. However, while we may be underdogs, we are confident that if we deliver our best performances on the day, we have the game to match these teams and excite the fans at Stade de France.”
