Sakura Fifteen Confirmed to Play Ireland on European Tour
The Japan Rugby Football Union is delighted to announce that the Japan Women’s National Rugby Team, the Sakura Fifteen will play Ireland on November 20. This will be the fifth clash between the two teams since August 2017.
The match is the third game confirmed for the Sakura Fifteen for their upcoming Autumn tour to Europe, with the team also due to play Wales in Cardiff on November 7, and Scotland in Edinburgh on November 14.
Sakura Fifteen’s Head Coach, Lesley McKenzie said:
“We’re excited to have the opportunity to play three test matches on our autumn tour. The players and management have displayed great character and positivity throughout the past 18 months responding to the challenges of the Covid pandemic. It’s been a privilege to be able to train and prepare as a group throughout this time, so it’s with great joy that we can now look forward to playing these test matches.
“We’re thankful for the opportunity to challenge three of the most historic rugby playing nations in the world, with all three games presenting a huge test for the team. Wales have secured a Rugby World Cup 2021 spot, while Scotland still have an opportunity to qualify for the tournament. Ireland will be looking to maintain their pride and demonstrate their ability after the disappointment of missing out on qualification. We’re expecting a massive physical and tactical challenge in all three matches, so as a continuously developing program, this tour will be an education of the highest quality for our players and staff. We couldn’t be more excited.”
The Sakura Fifteen are currently in training camp as they prepare for the coming autumn internationals. Further details on the Ireland match will be announced in due course.
