The World Rugby U20 Championship 2020, slated to take place in northern Italy from 28 June to 18 July 2020, has been cancelled due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The World Rugby U20 Championship is an annual tournament for under-20 national sides that features 12 teams spread across three pools. The World Rugby U20 Trophy, which features eight teams, is the second level of competition below the Championship. Promotion and relegation takes place between the Championship and the Trophy.

Japan U20 won the Trophy in Brazil in 2019 to gain promotion to the top-tier Championship in 2020.

The age-grade Japanese national side was drawn in Pool A along with defending champions France, Argentina and Ireland.
