On Friday, Japan beat Uruguay 33-7 in the Championship Cup Qualifying Round before losing 35-10 to Fiji in the Championship Cup round of 16.
On Saturday, Japan moved into the Challenge Trophy where they lost 35-17 to Canada in the quarterfinals.
On Sunday morning, Russia beat Japan 26-20 in the semi-finals of the play-offs for thirteenth place. Tries to Ilya Babaev, Yury Gostyuzhev and German Davydov got Russia out to a 19-5 lead at the break and although Japan fought back in the latter period, the gap was too big to close. Josefa Lilidamu, Jone Naikabula and Joe Kamana scored the tries for Japan with Vladislav Sozonov adding a further five pointer for Russia.
Japan now move into the play-off for fifteenth place against Kenya.
