On Friday, in the Championship Cup, the Sakura Sevens fell to France 33-7 in their opening game at the 2018 Rugby World Cup Sevens.

This put Japan in the Challenge Trophy quarterfinals where they beat Brazil 19-14 later in the day.

The scores were locked at 7-all at halftime after first half tries to Fumiko Otake for Japan and Bianca Silva for Brazil. The South Americans then nudged ahead 14-7 with a try to Isadora Cerullo early in the latter half, before Japan launched a dramatic fightback. A double to Yume Hirano, with her second coming late in the piece, did enough to put Japan ahead on the scoreboard at fulltime.
