On Friday, in the Championship Cup, the Sakura Sevens fell to France 33-7 in their opening game at the 2018 Rugby World Cup Sevens.
This put Japan in the Challenge Trophy quarterfinals where they beat Brazil 19-14 later in the day.
The scores were locked at 7-all at halftime after first half tries to Fumiko Otake for Japan and Bianca Silva for Brazil. The South Americans then nudged ahead 14-7 with a try to Isadora Cerullo early in the latter half, before Japan launched a dramatic fightback. A double to Yume Hirano, with her second coming late in the piece, did enough to put Japan ahead on the scoreboard at fulltime.
The win sees Japan play Fiji in the Challenge Trophy semi-finals around midday on Saturday.
