After beating Uruguay 33-7 in the Championship Cup Qualifying Round, Japan lost 35-10 to Fiji in the Championship Cup round of 16.

In this round-of-16 clash, Japan led Fiji 10-7 at the break on the back of first half tries to Kameli Soejima and Jose Seru. However, the Fijians turned up the heat in the second half with unanswered tries to Jerry Tuwai, Josua Tuisova, Semi Radradra and Jasa Veremalua dashing the hopes of Japanese fans. Semi Kunatani scored the remaining try for Fiji in the first half.

Japan now move into the Challenge Trophy where they face Canada in the quarterfinals on Saturday.
