On Friday, the Sakura Sevens fell to France 33-7 in their opening game at the 2018 Rugby World Cup Sevens. In this match-up in the Championship Cup in San Francisco, the French were too good for the Japanese side.

Fumiko Otake touched down for Japan later in the opening period but tries to Shannon Izar, Montserrat Amedee and Lina Guerin gave the French a comfortable 19-7 lead at the turnaround. France went on with the job after the break with additional tries to Audrey Ciofani and Coralie Bertrand confirming the victory.

The loss sees the Sakura Sevens progress to the Challenge Trophy where they face Brazil in the quarterfinals.
