Hesketh praises crowd, Jones lauds team’s bravery following win over Springboks

BRIGHTON, England (Sept. 19) – Japan wing Karne Hesketh praised the crowd at Brighton Community Stadium following Japan’s sensational 34-29 win over South Africa.

“The whole crowd was behind Japan. When South Africa gave up a penalty and we decided to go for it, that’s when we finally got their respect,” said the Munakata Sanix Blues player, whose try in the 84th sealed the famous win.

“You can’t imagine something like that because it’s so special. It was amazing.”

Head coach Eddie Jones had always said he thought his side could beat the two-time defending champions, but even he admitted he was in shock.

“It was a very humbling experience. I had to look at the score at the end of the match to see if it was true or not.”

And he warned the other Pool B opponents he wanted more.

“We are not done. If we make the quarter-finals then I can retire.”

Jones praised the decision of captain Michael Leitch to forego a kick at goal in the dying minutes that would have sealed a draw in order to go for the win.

“They were more than brave. It took great courage by the captain to go for the try. This result is right up there with my greatest experiences. I had to check whether this was a miracle or reality.”

Leitch for his part said “I think South Africa were rushed. We had to play our best rugby. Japan usually play better in the second half and this happened in this case.”

And he warned his players, “We want to celebrate this win but we have got Scotland just around the corner.”

Hooker Shota Horie said he felt the Springboks weren’t used to the Japan style and he praised the  defensive effort of his teammates.

“The opposition weren’t enjoying playing us. Physically I felt we would be able to stop them if we kept our bodies low. I thought there would be a chance if we get the ball and keep hold of it properly.”

And of Hesketh’s try, he simply said. “The best moment.”
