Jones wants side to adapt to conditions

HONG KONG (May 22) – Japan head coach Eddie Jones said Friday it was essential his team have a Plan B ahead of Saturday’s game against Hong Kong at Aberdeen Sports Ground as a big storm is expected to hit the former British colony over the weekend, adding to what are already difficult conditions underfoot.

“The field looks like it is out of Fiji,” Jones said referring to the grass. “There are bits out there that are like quicksand. So we will need to adapt to the conditions. The skies could open tomorrow so we may have to play differently. That doesn’t mean we won’t play positive rugby, it just means our tactics will be different.”

Jones reminded journalists of the 2003 Rugby World Cup when France were beaten 24-7 by England in the semifinal.

“The French were the best team in the competition up till then. But it rained, which was very unseasonal in Sydney, and they had no Plan B. They played terribly.”

Jones said his team would still strive to play possession based rugby but that they may have to change their tactics if the conditions so determine.

“For us it’s all about adapting on the run,” he said.

Jones said the game was a good opportunity for certain players to lay down their claim for a spot at the Rugby World Cup.

“Some of the players have been told where they stand regarding selection for the World Cup so it’s time they get the wheels in motion. Some of the young frontrowers tomorrow need to demolish the Hong Kong pack. That’s what I want to see.”

He also said that scrumhalf Yuki Yatomi had a key role to play.

“He has to read the conditions well and know when to pass and when to run,” said Jones.

“He needs to read the speed of the ruck and the ruck defense as well as the conditions.”
