Hirose returns to lead Japan

TOKYO (June 13) – The Japan starting XV to take on Wales in the second test on Saturday at the Prince Chichibu Memorial Rugby Ground shows just one change from the team that started last week’s gallant 22-18 loss to the European champions in Osaka.

Toshiaki Hirose has recovered from a hamstring injury and returns to the side to lead the Brave Blossoms from the right wing as Japan looks for its first ever win over the Welsh.

“This is a young team and we need Hirose’s leadership skills,” said head coach Eddie Jones.

Yoshikazu Fujita drops out of the starting XV to the bench to make way for the captain, but Jones was keen to point out that the teen wing had done nothing wrong.

“It’s not what Fujita doesn’t offer us. It’s just Hirose is an important part of the team and that’s why he gets this opportunity.” 

Joining Fujita on the bench are Shinya Makabe and Justin Ives, who both return to the match-day 23 following time out with injuries.

“They both give us a good option coming off the bench in the last 30 minutes,” said Jones. “Makabe was our starting right lock, while Ives showed in the Asian 5 Nations that he looks like a good player.”

Jones said the side he had picked was the strongest available to him and he was hopeful his players could upset the Welsh on what is likely to be a wet day in the nation’s capital. 

“It’s all about how we play and not what they do,” he said when informed that Wales had made four changes to their starting XV.
