Jones: "It was a game we could have won"

OSAKA (June 8) – Japan coach Eddie Jones said Saturday’s 22-18 loss to Wales at Hanazono Stadium was a game “we could have won and needed to win.”

Despite his disappointment, Jones said he was very proud of the effort put in by his players.

“There is a real resolve in the team to change Japanese rugby,” he said.

Jones also said the day had been a good day for rugby in the Land of the Rising Sun.

“It was fantastic to play in front of a full house. Hopefully all the people that were here will be back.”

Jones admitted the difference between the two teams was Japan’s inability to make the most of the opportunities that came their way.

“Test-match rugby is all about consistency,” he said. “And you only get that through playing tough rugby. This isn’t an excuse but the reality is our players don’t play enough tough games.”

Jones said the ability of the Welsh to change their tactics at halftime had proved to be the turning point of the game.

“They seemed seduced by the warm weather in the first half and then played a more orthodox game in the second.”

Despite the loss Jones said he was still looking forward to next week’s game in Tokyo.

“It’s important we play with the same courage, skill and conviction.”
