The tenth and final tournament of the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series 2018-19 was held at the Stade Jean-Bouin in Paris from 1-2 June 2019.
Japan were one of the fifteen core teams on the 2018-19 season along with Argentina, Australia, Canada, England, Fiji, France, Kenya, New Zealand, Samoa, Scotland, South Africa, Spain, USA and Wales. The core teams competed at every tournament, while one place was available to a non-core team at each tournament. Ireland were the non-core team at the 2019 Paris Sevens.
At Paris, Japan were in Pool D along with France, New Zealand and Scotland. In their pool games, Japan beat France 17-14, lost 31-14 to New Zealand and 22-21 to Scotland. The Japanese side finished third in Pool D to progress to the Challenge Trophy Quarterfinals.
In the knock-out stages, Japan lost 52-7 to England in the Challenge Trophy Quarterfinals. In the Thirteenth Place Semi-finals, Japan beat Wales 33-17 and then lost 31-26 to Scotland in the final.
Japan finished in fourteenth place overall in Paris and came away with three points.
Fiji defeated New Zealand 35-24 in the Cup Final.
After all ten completed rounds, Japan finished in the relegation position of fifteenth place overall on 27 points; four points behind Wales.
Meanwhile, Fiji topped the table on 186 points to collect the overall winner’s trophy for the season. The United States finished second on 177 points, New Zealand finished third on 162 points and South Africa finished in fourth place on 148 points to round out the qualifiers for the 2020 Olympic Sevens.
