The Japanese men started the 2018 Rugby World Cup Sevens with an emphatic 33-7 win over Uruguay in the Championship Cup Qualifying Round to progress to the round-of-16 Championship Cup where they face the might of Fiji.

In an explosive first half against the South Americans, Josefa Lilidamu posted a brace while Tevita Tupou and Katsuyuki Sakai ran in further five pointers. In the latter period, Uruguay got on the scoreboard with a converted try to Gaston Mieres, but Japan consolidated the win with a late try to Kameli Soejima.
