Japan and the United States of America have met on 23 occasions dating back to 1985. The USA have won 13, Japan 9 and there has been one draw.

The highest scoring win for Japan was 47-31 in Honolulu in June 1999, while the biggest winning margin was 18 points in the 38-20 win in Tokyo in June 2013. The longest winning sequence for Japan is five wins in a row between 2008 and 2014.

The highest scoring win for the USA was 74-5 in San Francisco in July 1996, while the biggest winning margin was 69 points in the same test. The longest winning sequence for the USA is four wins in a row between 1987 and 1991 and again between 1996 and 1998. However, the longest sequence without a loss is six tests in a row between 1985 and 1991 including the 9-all draw in 1986.
