The 2017 Hong Kong Sevens is round seven of the 2016-17 HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series.

Japan are one of the fifteen core teams in the main draw of the series and they are in Pool C along with Fiji, New Zealand and Wales. South Korea is the sixteenth and final team at the tournament.

Fiji as the reigning Hong Kong Sevens made short work of Japan with a resounding 36-0 win on the opening day of the Cathay Pacific/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens. The Fijians ran in six unanswered tries with Jerry Tuwai running in a brace and Joeli Lutumailagi and Osea Kolinisau also among the scorers. Things do not get any easier for Japan on day two with tough games against New Zealand and Wales on the card.
